ARLINGTON, Virginia - A three run first inning and a homerun by junior Dallas Culotta (Princess Anne, Maryland) were not enough as the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks fell to the George Washington Colonials in a midweek matchup, 10-4.
With the loss The Shore dropped to 5-22 on the season.
In addition to Culotta's second round tripper-a solo shot to right in the fourth-the Hawks earned offensive power with an RBI double from Dominic DeBlasie (Tilton, New Hampshire) and multi-hit games from juniors Jamison Trower (Chesterfield, Virginia) and Tyler Friis (Appleton, Wisconsin).
Junior Evan Bertone (Douglas, Massachusetts) took the loss for the Hawks, but rallied from a rough first inning to contribute three scoreless frames. Freshman Bryan Liriano (Rockville, Maryland) managed to tough out four innings of relief, preserving the bullpen for the upcoming weekend series.
Despite the outcome, Maryland Eastern Shore showed some promise at the start of the game with three runs in the first. Along with DeBlasie's RBI double the Hawks received run producing singles from Trower and senior Jordan Wesley (Mitchellville, Maryland). But the Colonials rallied for five runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead for good.
George Washington enjoyed an all-around performance from their offense, with every member of the starting lineup providing an RBI for the team. Outfielder Joey Bartosic led the Colonials with three hits in five at-bats.
The Shore resumes conference play in Hanover, Maryland against Coppin State this Saturday and Sunday.
