The Shore defeats hosts, wins Terrier Invitational

Sept. 2, 2017

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, New York - With a 3-0 win (25-8, 25-23, 25-21) over the Saint Francis Brooklyn Terriers, Maryland Eastern Shore ran the table with a perfect 4-0 weekend and were crowned champions of the Terrier Invitational in New York City Saturday evening.

With the win the Hawks improve to 5-2 on the season.

Three Hawks were named to the All-Tournament Team, with junior Lucia Babic (Sisak, Croatia) garnering MVP honors. She was joined by graduate student Mere Serea (Suva, Fiji) and sophomore Iva Vujosevic (Bar, Montenegro).

Babic recorded 52 kills for the tournament, including a match high 17 in the victory over the Terriers, to go along with 37 digs, 10 blocks and eight aces. Serea tallied 13 kills and 13 blocks-helping her maintain her MEAC leading 1.28 blocks per set-and Iva added 39 kills, 36 digs, 11 blocks, and nine aces.

In the match versus the Terriers, sophomore Ivana Blazevic (Zagreb, Croatia) averaged 12 assists per set and punched home a match high eight aces. Junior Rachel Kayongo (Northridge, California) registered eight kills with a .389 hitting percentage.

Maryland Eastern Shore dominated the first set, 25-8, but had to lock into a furious battle with the hometown Terriers in the second and third sets. The second frame went down to the wire with both teams tied after 40 volleys, but two Babic kills and a Blazevic ace sealed a 2-0 lead for the Hawks. A 5-0 run thru the midway point of the third set turned a tie game into a lead for The Shore that they would not relinquish, ultimately winning by four.

The Shore will head to Winston-Salem, North Carolina next weekend for the Demon Deacon Invitational, hosted by Wake Forest University.
