NC State Balanced Attack Grounds Eastern Shore

Wolfpack Length and Size Bother the Hawks

RALEIGH, North Carolina From the beginning to the end of the Saturday's (Nov. 10) game, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team was outmatched as they dropped their contest with the North Carolina State University Wolfpack 95-49.

The Hawks (0-2) trailed by 36 at halftime and by as many as 49 in the game. NC State utilized full court pressure and strong ball denial all game to force the Hawks into 31.5 percent shooting for the game.

"It's hard to duplicate the kind of pressure that they use in a practice," head coach Clifford Reed said. "They have 6'5" and 6'6" wings and big guys that are very athletic and that's something you can't simulate."

NC State also made their presence felt on the glass as they outrebounded Maryland Eastern Shore 47-24. Also, the Wolfpack had strong ball movement as they had 23 assists on 35 made baskets.

The Hawks did not get their first points of the game until the 15:34 mark of the first half after an AJ Cheeseman layup. Only four players from the Shore would score in the opening 20 minutes as the Wolfpack carried a 51-15 lead into the locker room.

However, the second half was a different story for Eastern Shore. NC State only outscored the Hawks by 10 in the final 20 minutes. Cheeseman in particular was more assertive in the second half as he scored 14 of his team high 18 points after halftime before fouling out with 2:50 remaining. He also led the Hawks in rebounding with seven and took three charges on defense.

"I think he (Cheeseman) got accustomed to the speed and toughness of the game as time went on," Reed said. "He adjusted and really got settled in during the second half, but we were already facing a big deficit."

Fifth-year guard Ryan Andino seemed to get more comfortable in the second half as well. He finished with 14 points for the Hawks, including four from downtown, and had three steals in the contest. Junior point guard Bryan Urrutia had another all-around game for the Hawks as he had eight points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals.

NC State had a balanced attacked on offense as all ten players that played scored and had at least two made field goals. The Wolfpack shot 56.5 percent from the field and 40.7 percent from 3-point range. They were led by senior Torin Dorn, who had a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds.

"I'm happy that we continued to compete in the second half," Reed said. "I also think we ran our stuff on offense a little better which helped with scoring later on."

The Shore will have their home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 13, versus Longwood in the William P. Hytche Center. Tip will be at 7 p.m.
