PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball team got some big minutes for the news faces on Tuesday night (Nov. 20) against visiting Christian Collegiate Athletic Association opponent Regent University in a 72-16 victory.
The Hawks (2-4) started four freshmen and a sophomore and played only the team's usual reserves.
"We started with a whole different lineup with kids who hadn't been playing much at all this year other than last game," Hawks coach
Fred Batchelor said. "I thought the kids who played tonight did well. They executed well. They did what we asked them to do."
Junior JUCO transfer
Adrienne Jones (Baltimore, Maryland) scored a team-high 14 points to go with five boards in 15 minutes off the bench. A pair of freshmen put up double-doubles as
Taylor Clayborne (Upper Marlboro, Maryland) put up 12 points and 12 rebound and classmate
Rose Smith (Brooklyn, New York) scored 10 points and grabbed 10 boards.
Sophomore
Angelique Taylor (Wachapreague, Virginia) chipped in eight points and nine rebounds.
There were some growing pains as the Hawks committed 23 turnovers.
Defensively the Hawks held the Royals to 10 percent shooting from the field and outrebounded them 60-22.
"I thought defensively we communicated, we played with some energy and we limited them to one shot," Batchelor said. "We played a lot of 2-3 zone and I thought we covered well. They knew their assignments and that is what we are looking for. We are looking for kids who understand what we are asking them to do, so that when they are called upon they are ready to go."
The Hawks will return to action after the Thanksgiving break when they travel to Longwood Nov. 27.
"We want to enjoy Thanksgiving," Batchelor said. "We have three days off so we want them to enjoy time with their family and the holiday and come back replenished. We started in August, so it has been a long season so far, so we want to take some time off and then we want to get back and get focused. It's going to be tough because we have to get back and get ready to get on the road."
Following the game at Longwood, the Hawks will travel to Syracuse (Dec. 5), Wake Forest (Dec. 8) and Miami (Dec. 16.).
