Freshmen shine in loss to Colonials

Feb. 28, 2018

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Virginia - Maryland Eastern Shore freshman Dillon Oxyer (Pasadena, Maryland) went 2-for-4 with an RBI at the dish and fellow freshman Chris Levere (King George, Virginia) was effective in relief, but the Hawks fell 8-3 to the George Washington Colonials Wednesday (Feb. 28).

Oxyer upped his rose nearly 100 points and Levere dropped his ERA to 2.25 after his scoreless inning.

A couple more freshmen also enjoyed solid outings. Brian Cordell (Pasadena, Maryland) scored on Oxyer's RBI hit, and Israel Velasquez (Riverdale Park, Maryland) earned his first collegiate hit with a single in the ninth.

The Shore held a brief lead after a wild pitch plated a run in the first. But in the bottom half of the frame, George Washington used a homerun to strike back with three runs. The Colonials then scored once in the second, twice in the third, and again in the fourth and sixth innings to pull away.

The Hawks scored in the third when junior Ryan Rotondo (Warwick, Rhode Island) scored on a double play grounder. Oxyer's single in the seventh sent home the third run.

For George Washington (3-6), Nate Fassnacht collected three hits and three RBI's while Jaret Edwards pitching four innings allowing just one run to earn the win.

Maryland Eastern Shore (0-5) returns to Perdue Stadium for four this weekend against Lafayette College. Games begin Saturday (Mar. 3) at noon.
