ACWORTH, Georgia - The Hawks dropped games to the North Carolina Central University Eagles and the Alabama State University Hornets in day one of the HBCU Softball Tournament. The Eagles defeated the Hawks 4-0, while the Hornets beat the Shore 13-4.
In game one, senior Courtney Mirabella was dominate in the circle for NCCU. She struck out 20 Hawk batters in her seven innings of work.
Eastern Shore got four hits off of Mirabella. Two came from junior Mackenzie Brown, who also stole two bases in the contest, and freshman Jordan Robinson and junior Breana Florez each had one hit.
Freshman Nasya Goodman tossed another complete game for the Hawks against NCCU. She did not allow any runs to cross home plate prior to the sixth inning, where the Eagles scored all of their runs.
In the second game, the Hawks saw ASU get 15 hits. They were paced by Taylor Rosser, who hit three home runs in the contest.
The Hawks scored all of their runs in the third inning. Goodman scored the first run after junior Kayla Trekell drew a walk. Senior Samantha Casarez gave the Hawks a 3-2 lead after a two-run double to the left field gap that brought Heidi Smith and Trekell home. Florez followed that with an RBI groundout that scored Brown.
Alabama State tied the score in the bottom half of that inning before a nine run explosion in the fourth led to the game being called after five innings.
The Hawks are back in action on Sunday (Mar. 11) against conference opponent Savannah State in the final day of the HBCU Softball Tournament.
