SALISBURY, Maryland -- In two fiercely battled contests, Maryland Eastern Shore fell just short against Norfolk State. The Spartans baseball team managed a sweep of the Hawks with finals of 6-5 in the opener, and 4-2 in the nightcap.
The offensive star for the Hawks was junior Dominic DeBlasie (Tilton, New Hampshire), who went 5-for-7 with two RBI's and a run scored. Senior Tyler Friis (Appleton, Wisconsin) had a multi-hit day with a base knock in each game.
Pitching was effective for the Hawks as well, spearheaded by sophomore Andre Bell (Detroit, Michigan), who threw four innings of one run ball. Fellow sophomore Marty Tolson, Jr. (Stafford, Virginia) went five innings to start the opener with three strikeouts. Senior Toby Hoskins (North East, Maryland) went the distance in the seven inning nightcap with three punch outs of his own.
Norfolk State earned early leads in both games, then had to fend off a Hawks comeback. The Shore cracked the scoreboard in the fourth of game one with a double by sophomore Blake Coleman (Woodbridge, Virginia). When the Spartans put a three spot up in the fifth, the Hawks responded with two runs in the bottom half.
The score ran up to 6-4 Norfolk heading into the last of the ninth, but the Hawks threatened by loading the bases with no one out and senior Jamison Trower (Chesterfield, Virginia) at the plate. Trower ripped a sharp grounder up the middle that seemed destined to tie the game. But Norfolk State's Alsander Womack made a diving stop to start a double play that saved the win for the Spartans.
In the second contest, Norfolk State jumped out to a 4-0 lead. The Shore responded with two in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a DeBlasie single and a double from senior Jessey Valdez (Dorchester, Massachusetts). Although Hoskins did not allow a baserunner for the last three innings, the Hawks were held in check by Spartan starter Jonathan Mahoney. He matched Hoskins with a complete game as the visitors earned the sweep.
The series finale will be at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium this Sunday (Mar. 25) at noon.
