SALISBURY, Maryland - After a heartbreaking 4-3 loss the Maryland Eastern Shore baseball rode a complete game effort from sophomore Caleb Walston (Princess Anne, Maryland) to a 2-1 win to split Tuesday's (Mar. 27) doubleheader with Mount St. Mary's.
Before this afternoon, Walston's previous high at The Shore was four innings. He went the distance in a complete game effort, surrendering one run and three hits with a pair of strikeouts. At one point he retired 18 straight Mountaineers in what was his first collegiate victory.
On the offense, junior Dominic DeBlasie (Tilton, New Hampshire) drove in three of Maryland Eastern Shore's (4-21) five runs. Freshman Dwayne Marshall (Piscataway, New Jersey) collected a hit in each game and scored the game winning run.
Mount St. Mary's (5-12) scored the first run in the nightcap, but the Hawks responded in the second with an RBI single from freshman Brian Cordell (Pasadena, Maryland) to tie the score. In the sixth, DeBlasie drove a single to center, sending Marshall home.
In the opener, The Mount scored three runs to lead first. In the fourth, DeBlasie doubled to score the first two runs. Senior Jessey Valdez (Dorchester, Massachusetts) tied the score with an RBI single of his own. The Mountaineers went ahead on a passed ball in the seventh for the 4-3 win.
Other top performers include a solid six innings from freshman Chris Levere (King George, Virginia) and a 1-for-2 opener by freshman Avery Tunnell (Dover, Delaware).
The Shore gets ready for a three game series with Delaware State, beginning Friday (Mar. 30). The first game of the series takes place in Dover with the doubleheader finale Saturday (Mar. 31) at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
