EMMITSBURG, Maryland -- Maryland Eastern Shore found the momentum Tuesday (Apr. 10) needed to pull off a doubleheader split with Mount St. Mary's . The Hawks dropped the first game 8-5, and then rallied to win 9-5 in extra innings for the second game.
In the first game, the Mountaineers (8-19) held the Hawks (7-26) hitless for the first 5 1/3 innings. The contest was a scoreless deadlock until the fourth when The Mount put up eight runs to earn a commanding lead. Senior Tyler Friis (Appleton, Wisconsin) broke up the no-hit bid with his first home run as a Hawk--a solo shot beyond the right field fence.
The Shore made things interesting in the seventh, loading the bases on singles. The Mount then walked in two, hit a third, and sent a fourth run home on a wild pitch. That sent the go-ahead run to the plate, but the Mountaineers battled back to induce a pop out, strike out and fly out the win the game.
Game two started off in The Mount's favor as the home team piled up three runs in three innings. But in the fifth the Hawks loaded the bases again with no one out. Senior Jamison Trower (Chesterfield, Virginia) singled home the first run. Friis scored on a double play, and freshman Dillon Oxyer (Pasadena, Maryland) scored on a passed ball to tie the game.
The go-ahead run scampered home in the sixth when senior Jessey Valdez (Dorchester, Massachusetts) crossed the plate on an error. Eastern Shore added insurance when junior Dominic DeBlasie (Tilton, New Hampshire) squeezed in Trower to make it 5-3.
That insurance would come in handy. One out away from victory, the Hawks surrended an infield single to put the tying run at the plate. The Mount's Patrick Causa stepped up and promptly delivered a two run shot to tie the contest.
Both teams came up empty in the eighth inning, but in the ninth the Hawks pushed four runs in, capped off with a two run double by freshman Brian Cordell (Pasadena, Maryland). Senior Toby Hoskins (North East, Maryland) then shut the door for his third win of the season.
Next up for the Hawks is a trip to Virginia for a three game series with Norfolk State. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday (Apr. 14).
