GLEN BURNIE, Maryland - Maryland Eastern Shore hoped to keep winning ways going as they headed across the bay for the first of three with Coppin State on Thursday (Apr. 5). But the Eagles had other plans, putting double digits on the board with a 15-1 win in seven at the Bachman Sports Complex.
The Shore (6-22, 4-6 MEAC) scattered five hits in the contest, with junior Dominic DeBlasie (Tilton, New Hampshire) scoring the lone run in the fifth.
Coppin State (9-15-1, 8-2 MEAC) pounded out 13 safe hits, earned eight walks, were struck by pitches four times and benefited from seven errors by the Hawks. With the victory the Eagles extend their lead in the MEAC North to 1 ½ games over Norfolk State and four games over the third place Hawks.
The Eagles led throughout the contest, gradually building a 3-0 lead in the first three innings. Coppin then blew the game open with a five run fourth and a six spot in the sixth.
Sophomore pitcher Marty Tolson, Jr. (Stafford, Virginia) took the loss for Maryland Eastern Shore after 3 1/3 innings of work.
The Hawks and Eagles will face off in a doubleheader Friday (Apr. 6) at Bachman. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Glen Burnie.
