DAYTONA BEACH, Florida - The Hawks' 2018 season came to an end Thursday (May 17) with a 13-3 loss to the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) tournament.
Sophomore Dwayne Marshall (Piscataway, New Jersey) had the lone multi-hit game, with three hits in four trips to the plate. Senior Tyler Friis (Appleton, Wisconsin) got a base knock and a walk to end his Hawk career with a 27 game on-base streak.
Facing the two time defending MEAC champs in an elimination game, The Shore had several opportunities to bring in runs. In total the Hawks left ten runners on base during the loss. Friis scored off a wild pitch to break the ice in the fifth.
On the other hand the Wildcats struck early with a run in the second inning. They followed it with a five run fourth, with Danny Rodriguez belting a two run single. Two more runs came across in the fifth to allow Bethune-Cookman to pull ahead 8-1.
Junior Joey Nicastro (New Market, Maryland) earned an RBI groundout and sophomore Blake Coleman (Woodbridge, Virginia) contributed an RBI single to pull within 8-3 in the sixth. But Bethune-Cookman's Joey Calamita reared back and delivered a clutch strikeout that left the bases loaded to end the threat.
From then on the Wildcats added two more runs in the sixth, followed by three in the eighth to finish off the game.
Maryland Eastern Shore concludes its season at 12-41. A total of 18 Hawks are eligible to come back for the 2019 season, which will kick off next February.
