BETHESDA, Maryland - The Hawks baseball team battled in both contests Wednesday (May 9) with Georgetown, but in the end it was the Hoyas who earned the victories. Georgetown took the first game 7-5 and then came back to win the nightcap 7-6.
Maryland Eastern Shore completed its regular season with a record of 12-39.
Junior Joey Nicastro (New Market, Maryland) was the main run producer for the Hawks. He drove in four runs, including three in the first game. Senior Jamison Trower (Chesterfield, Virginia), sophomore Dwayne Marshall (Piscataway, New Jersey) and freshman Dillon Oxyer (Pasadena, Maryland) had multi hit efforts during the doubleheader.
On the mound, senior Toby Hoskins (North East, Maryland) and sophomores Andre Bell (Detroit, Michigan) and Caleb Walston (Princess Anne, Maryland) turned in scoreless relief outings.
Both teams turned in five run first innings. In the first game it was Georgetown who got on the board early. Maryland Eastern Shore rallied at several junctions but a last inning rally fell short.
The Hawks struck first in the second game, as they batted around to score five, including a double by sophomore Blake Coleman (Woodbridge, Virginia) that capped off the outburst. Georgetown worked their way back into the contest over the next two innings, closing the gap to one.
Freshman Avery Tunnell (Dover, Delaware) scored in the third to extend the lead to 6-4, but the Hoyas immediately countered again. The home team would score twice in the fourth to retake the lead at 7-6. From there the Hoya pitchers quieted the Hawks offense to preserve their team's comeback.
Next up for the Hawks is the opening game of the 2018 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Championship. First pitch is set for noon next Wednesday (May 16) in Daytona Beach, Florida.
