CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina — Hoping to leave the Tar Heel state with at least a couple of sets to their credit, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team was denied by the UNCG Spartans. Although a couple sets were close, the Spartans swept the Hawks (16-25, 12-25, 22-25) in their finale at the Carolina Classic.

The middles trio - freshman Mauri Carver (Elizabeth City, North Carolina), sophomore Sola Okesanjo (Chicago, Illinois) and junior Lidia Chery (Garfield, New Jersey) combined for seven kills on 17 attempts. Carver went 3-for-5 to raise her team high hitting percentage to .368.
At two junctions the Hawks were within striking distance. They fought to a 13-13 tie in set one before UNCG rattled off a 12-3 run to win going away. In set three The Shore fended off a couple of Spartan rally to tie the score at 19 before a 6-2 UNCG rally ended the match.
The Spartans (3-2) received 14 kills from Holly Behrends and 16 digs from Christina Gregory.
