Hawks strike down Bulldogs in volleyball sweep

Babic, Kayongo get nine kills each in victory

PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — For the second straight match the University of Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team swept their opponents off the court, winning 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-19) over the South Carolina State Bulldogs Saturday (Sept. 8).

Seniors Lucia Babic (Sisak, Croatia) and Rachel Kayongo (Northridge, California) led the attack with nine kills each. Freshman Tijana Korosec (Belgrade, Serbia) came within one defensive stop of a double-double with 23 assists and nine digs. Senior Koya Sowells (Missouri City, Texas) delivered a match high 12 digs and four aces.

The Shore (2-6) hit .269 to the Bulldogs' .069, and averaged 3.33 aces per set. South Carolina State (0-7) edged the Hawks in digs 38-37, but Eastern Shore countered in blocks by a four to three margin.

The Hawks dominated the first two sets, taking their first multi-point lead at the 8-6 mark in set one. They didn't look back in set two, blowing the set open by winning nine of the first 10 volleys.

In set three the Bulldogs charged ahead for an early 6-3 lead. Slowly but surely the Hawks climbed back towards even, until Sowells was given the serve. Just like their match against St. Francis Brooklyn Friday (Sept. 7), she led the comeback, using three aces to surge back into the lead for good.

Maryland Eastern Shore will attempt to win their home tournament in the finale against Hampton. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Hytche Center.
