PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks men's basketball team will play their first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game of the season on Saturday (Jan. 5) against the Morgan State University Bears. The two teams will tip at approximately 4 p.m. following the women's game that begins at 2 p.m.
The Hawks (2-13) are coming off a 68-62 win versus Division II opponent Chestnut Hill on New Year's Eve. Junior Tyler Jones (Atlantic City, NJ) led the way for the Hawks with 19 points and seven rebounds. Colen Gaynor (Berlin, MD) and Isaac Taylor (Wachapreague, VA) each finished in double figures as well with 12 and 11 points respectively.
If Saturday's game follows the script of the recent matchups of the Hawks and Bears, the contest should come down to the wire. Last season, Morgan State squeezed out an 85-82 win and back in 2017, Dontae Caldwell (Santa Ana, CA) hit a late three to lift the Shore to a 67-66 win.
MSU is coming off a 77-75 loss to Division II Lincoln (Pa.) on Jan. 3. However, the Bears have shown themselves capable of beating quality opponents as they already have wins this season over Navy, Mount St. Mary's and Towson.
Freshman guard Sherwyn Devonish-Prince leads the Bears in scoring with 10.7 points per game and junior Stanley Davis is right behind him with 10 points per game.
Saturday's game can be heard locally on Fox Sports 960 AM WTGM and online at EasternShoreHawks.com. Pregame coverage begins at 3:45 p.m. with Will DeBoer on The Shore Sports Network.
