Tough start at William & Mary sinks Hawks on road

Next up for Eastern Shore is Syracuse

PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore had a rough first quarter on Saturday at William & Mary turning the ball over 10 times and getting whistled for 11 fouls and trailing 25-6. It was a hole that proved too deep to dig out of as the Hawks (1-1) eventually fell 78-50.

"We started the game terrible with the turnovers," Hawks coach Fred Batchelor said. "I thought we were really scared. For the first time we started three kids who had never started a game. I thought Porsha Sydnor (Chicago, Illinois) did a really good job from the top, but I thought we played a little scared with our guards and I thought their pressure bothered us and we never really responded."

The Hawks actually got on the board first with a Bairesha Gill-Miles (Lexington, Kentucky) steal and layup, but the Tribe reeled of 18 straight points after that.

"They shot 12 free throws and we really just struggled to guard them and we really struggled to guard them without having our defense set," Batchelor said. "There were a lot of things we have been working on where we were exposed, which we thought we had addressed in regard to defensively. We knew we were going to be challenged with being able to guard them, but we didn't feel that we'd give up so many easy buckets."

The Hawks put together a little bit of offense in the second quarter when they also found a way to slow down the W&M offense.

"I thought we showed a little bit of fight from time-to-time in winning the second quarter, but outside of that, that was pretty much it — and that was only by one point after being down by 18 to start the game."

Gill-Miles finished the game with a season-high 17 points to lead The Shore, but 13 of those came in the second half.

Junior guard Amanda Carney (Parlin, New Jersey) led the Hawks with nine rebounds and added two assists, a steal and 11 points. She was 5-for-5 form the free throw line.

"I thought Amanda coming off the bench in the first half was pretty effective," Batchelor said. "She had nine rebounds and I thought she showed a little bit of toughness coming in. And Angelique Taylor (Wachapreague, Virginia) played well off the bench. You just need to find some fight somewhere and I thought they were a couple of kids who came off and gave us that."

Taylor had two points and four rebounds in 13 minutes. Sydnor had seven points and four assists.

"I was really disappointed with our defensive effectiveness and our offensive efficiency as far as execution," Batchelor said. "I think that had a lot to do with their defense and their offense at the same time. We are lacking some awareness and that comes with experience for a lot of young kids. But we have got to get it quick because here is the season."

The Hawks will return to action Tuesday (Nov. 12) when they play at Syracuse at 8 p.m.
