GREENSBORO, North Carolina — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore fell behind 10-0 at the start of Sunday's road contest at University of North Carolina Greensboro and really never recovered on the way to an 86-48 loss.
"I thought they probably played one of their better games all around," Hawks coach Fred Batchelor said of UNCG. "They shot the ball well. They moved the ball well. We were a little flat. It started with some turnovers to begin with. We just didn't get off to a good start. We showed a little fight later part of the first quarter and into the second. But we have got to stop shooting ourselves sin the foot to start the game."
The Hawks shot 34.6% from the field, made 3-of-21 from behind the arc and made just 9-of-17 free throws. The turned the ball over 20 times and had just eight assists.
The Spartans had 21 assists, shot 53.7% from the field and coughed it up just 10 times.
"They shot as well from 3-point land as we did form the field (36%)," Batchelor said. "We had eight missed free throws and with the turnovers we can't compete like that. It wasn't the turnovers that I thought they forced — it was not catching or making a bad pass. Those are turnovers where I look and say that's coaching because those are turnovers that usually happen in practice that are not addressed.
"I'd like to think we have addressed that, but I have to accept responsibility for that — the fact that we just haven't played well enough in a game to beat a good team. That falls on me and the only thing we can do is keep working and keep them together."
There were few bright spots on the night as the team looked more like the shell-shocked squad that started the game at William & Mary than the one that played with Syracuse one game later.
The Hawks (1-3) got 13 first-half points from Bairesha Gill-Miles (Lexington, Kentucky) in just 14 minutes of the first half, but she missed the entire second half with an upper body injury. No other Hawks reached double figures.
"It's a young team and they are trying to find their identity against two teams (William & Mary and UNCG) that kind of know what they want, know who they are and know what they want to accomplish," Batchelor said. "I think sometimes there are bad recipes and this has been a bad recipe for us. We are hoping to find ourselves, establish our identity and build some confidence. I think that is going to be important for us, but it doesn't get any easier with this schedule. We have to keep working and stay positive."
The Shore will next travel to Virginia Teach for a 6:30 p.m. contest on Tuesday (Nov. 19).
