First Half Offensive Woes down the Hawks at Stanford

Eastern Shore Responds To Win the Second Half

PALO ALTO, California — After making just five field goals in the first half on Tuesday (Nov. 19) at Stanford, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore came back in the second to outscore the Cardinal as Stanford would get the 76-55 win.

"We came out in the second half and played a lot looser because in the first half we were tight," head coach Jason Crafton said. "We have been a second half basketball team and we are trying to find a way to put halves together."

The Hawks (0-5) came out of the gate struggling to make a basket. They were down 12-1 eight minutes into the game before junior Canaan Bartley (Miami, Fla.) got the team's first field goal. Eastern Shore would continue to struggle on offense for the rest of the half and were down 46-16 at halftime.

In the final 20 minutes of the game, the Hawks outscored Stanford 39-30. Maryland Eastern Shore would open the second half on a 13-2 run for the first seven minutes. The Hawks' defense revved up the pressure and forced nine turnovers in the first part of the half.

By the end of the game, Eastern Shore had forced 19 turnovers. Also despite an obvious height disadvantage, the Hawks would finish with five blocks while Stanford had just three.

"I am really happy with the fight we showed in the second half," Crafton said. "We took some punches early but we threw a lot back and I'm proud of that."

Bartley led the squad in scoring as he finished with 10 points. Senior Gabriel Gyamfi (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) anchored the Hawks defense for the night as he had three steals and two blocks along with six points.

The Shore will now face the Oklahoma Sooners on Nov. 21 to conclude their road trip. After that, Eastern Shore will play their home opener against Wofford on Nov. 26.
