Hawks show depth, enthusiasm in season-opening win

The Shore will next play at William & Mary

PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore kicked off the 2019-20 season with a runaway 75-29 victory against visiting Division III Wesley College knocking off the rust while getting a look at the entirety of what looks to be a deep roster.

"I thought it was a good showing for playing 15 kids," Hawks coach Fred Batchelor said. "I have been in these games before where you play every kid and you tell them not to take what the defense gives you because you aren't trying to run up the score. Those are always tough games because it can take you out of rhythm and out of play. I thought this was a good showing without trying to take advantage of our competition."

The Hawks got a game-high 14 points from senior Adrienne Jones (Baltimore, Maryland), while junior Amanda Carney (Parlin, New Jersey) chipped in 11 off the bench. Sophomore

Brooklyn Bailey (Rock Hill, South Carolina) picked up eight points, while classmate Rose Smith (Harlem, New York) pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.

The Hawks jumped out to a 24-6 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game.

"I liked the start to the game," Batchelor said. "I thought we were really focused. I thought the attention to detail was good and I liked the energy that we had for each other. Today was a good team win."

Fourteen different Hawks scored in all, while the team shot 39 % from the field and 30 % from 3-point land. The Shore outrebounded the Wolverines 44-31 and forced 34 turnovers. The Hawks turned the ball over just 18 times.

"I think its going to be important for us to keep everybody involved because I think you are going to see us play not 12 kids on a regular basis, but you are going to see 12 kids in and out of the rotation from time to time depending on how they are playing to keep them all motivated and keep them all connected.

"I thought tonight was a good first step for that."

This was the team's first public game against another squad. Eastern Shore did play a closed scrimmage against University of Maryland Baltimore County, but missed out on a scheduled exhibition last week when Salisbury University pulled out of the 10-Mile Tipoff two days before the game.

The Hawks (1-0) will next travel to William & Mary for a Nov. 9 contest that will being at 6 p.m.
