PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore started Saturday's matchup with Georgetown in an inspired manner hanging close with their Big East opponent trailing just 15-12 by the end of the first quarter.
But the Hoyas held the Hawks to 0-for-8 shooting in the second quarter pushing the halftime lead to 28-17 before eventually running away with a 57-39 victory.
"We held them to 57 points, but we only scored 39 and that's what really hurt us," Hawks coach Fred Batchelor said. "We didn't have a field goal in the second quarter and it kind of trickled into the second half. I thought they played very inspired defense which made it difficult for us but we just weren't able to create enough space and knock down those shots when we had them."
The Hawks shot just 23.5% from the field, 26.7% from behind the arc and were 11-for-16 from the free throw line. They were outrebounded by the much bigger Hoyas 46-36, but actually coughed the ball up just 16 times while forcing 17 turnovers.
Sophomore Brooklyn Bailey (Rock Hill, South Carolina) led the Hawks with 10 points and was the only one to reach double digits.
Junior Amanda Carney (Old Bridge, New Jersey) — who leads the Hawks in scoring and rebounding — was held to just six points on 1-of-3 from the field. She grabbed five rebounds and had a pair of steals. She was chased around all day by a Georgetown defender — often Brianna Jones a graduate transfer from Lousiville. Despite running through traffic and off screens all night, Carney wasn't able to get enough space to get off her shot.
"They did a good job of understanding their assignments with the right matchup," Batchelor said. "When you have playing against a kid like Amanda, if you have the right defender who can understand what their responsibilities are in guarding her — and then when we couldn't get by anyone else off the dribble to force any type of help, that's a good recipe for her not getting a good opportunity to get off and that's what happened today."
Taylor Clayborne (Upper Marlboro, Maryland) pulled down a team-high six rebounds in 13 minutes off the bench.
"I thought Taylor Clayborne, in just her second game back after not playing all year, is showing a lot on energy and bringing some enthusiasm off the bench as a sophomore," Batchelor said. "I'm expecting her to be able to come in and give us some help going forward."
Eastern Shore (3-9) will be off until Dec. 28 when they travel to Charlotte for a 4 p.m. matchup. Following that final nonconference road trip, the squad hosts Howard as part of a men's and women's doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. on Jan. 4.
