PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — After being on the wrong side of the scoreboard 10 times to start the season, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team logged their first win of the season on Sunday (Dec. 8) as they defeated the Clarks Summit University Defenders 85-39.
With the win, the Hawks (1-10) got head coach Jason Crafton his first victory as a Division I head coach.
"I am definitely happy to come out with a W because we have been on the opposite end enough," Crafton said. "The competitor in me still looks at the 19 turnovers we had and wants to play better for us to have the type of success we are looking to have."
Sunday game was the first time the Hawks scored over 80 points since Jan. 8, 2018 in a game against Bethune-Cookman. It also marked the highest number of turnovers the Hawks have forced in school history. Clarks Summit had 41 turnovers that led to 48 points for Eastern Shore.
The Defenders made the first bucket of the game and that was followed by a 3-pointer from redshirt senior Ahmad Frost (Cincinnati, Ohio). Those 16 seconds would be the only lead CSU enjoyed the entire evening.
Maryland Eastern Shore led 15-10 with just under 11 minutes to play in the first half. They would go on to outscore their opponent 36-5 for the rest of the half to take a 51-15 lead into the locker room. The highlight of the run came at the 3:13 mark as freshman Da'Shawn Phillip (Baltimore, Md.) went baseline and brought the house down with a thunderous dunk.
The second half was more of the same for the home team. The Shore would see their lead balloon to as many as 48 points in the final 20 minutes before they finished with the 46-point victory.
All 10 players that saw action for the Hawks got into the scoring column. Phillip and juniors Ty Gibson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Canaan Bartley (Miami, Fla.) each finished with 12 points to tie for the game high. Phillip also had six steals, which is the most of any Hawks player since Troy Snyder had six in a game at Bethune-Cookman on Jan. 28, 2013. The team finished the game with 26 steals.
Eastern Shore will now have nine days off between games as they will not take the court again until Dec. 17 at East Carolina.
