RICHMOND, Kentucky — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team struggled on offense and late rallies by Eastern Kentucky gave the Colonels 5-1 and 16-1 wins on Friday (Feb. 22). The Hawks' record falls to 1-5 on the season.
Pitching helped The Shore stay competitive for all of game one and the first half of the nightcap. Dwayne Marshall (Piscataway, New Jersey) fanned nine Colonels over 3 â…“ innings and surrendered just one run. Marty Tolson (Stafford, Virginia) went four strong innings in game two with one earned runs and four strikeouts. In relief, Johnny Franco (Hackettstown, New Jersey) added three punchouts in his 2 â…” innings of work with no hits allowed.
The Hawks managed two runs during the doubleheader. Nick Roets (Charlotte, North Carolina) scored on a wild pitch in the eighth inning of game one and Brantley Cutler (Washington, North Carolina) came home on a Joey Nicastro (New Market, Maryland) in the seventh of game two.
Eastern Kentucky used a three run frame in the eighth of the opener and a seven spot in the fifth of the nightcap to seal their victories.
Maryland Eastern Shore will travel to Dayton, Ohio to conclude the series with the Colonels. Games begin at 10 a.m. Saturday (Feb. 23) and Sunday (Feb. 24) at Wright State's Nischwitz Stadium.
