Eastern Shore Drops Two in CSU Tournament

Hawks Home Opener Is In Two Weeks

CHARLESTON, South Carolina The University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team fell to the University of South Dakota and Charleston Southern University on Saturday (Feb. 9) in their final two games of the Charleston Southern Tournament.

The Hawks fell 13-2 versus South Dakota and 10-2 against Charleston Southern. Both games ended after five innings were played.

In game one, SD finished with 13 hits to get their runs. They scored six runs in the top of the fifth to open their lead up late.

Eastern Shore scored their two runs in the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Senior Kiana Peterson (Willingboro, NJ) was the first baserunner after she drew a walk. Freshman Jordan Kelly (Bridgeton, NJ) followed that with a single through the left side. After a sacrifice bunt by senior Heidi Smith (Odenton, MD) moved the runners, sophomore Jordan Robinson (Gaithersburg, MD) reached on a fielding error and Peterson and Kelly came in to score.

Senior Daeshia Jones (Teaneck, NJ) and sophomore Stephanie Huff (Montoursville, PA) each had a hit versus South Dakota.

In game two, Charleston Southern scored one run in each of the first four innings. They would close the game by scoring six in the fifth to end the game in that inning.

Maryland Eastern Shore's runs would come in the fourth inning. Senior Breana Florez (Houston, TX) doubled to center field to start the inning. Huff would double to left center after that to bring Florez across home plate. Junior Kamryn Lanier (Chester, VA) moved Huff to third base on a groundout to second base and a wild pitch to next batter would give Huff the chance to score. Huff went 2-2 in the game with an RBI and run scored. Florez and Kelly each had one hit in the contest.

The Shore will be off for two weeks before having their home opening doubleheader versus Marist on Feb. 23.
