Early lead gives way to Hawks defeat

Fifth inning proves fatal as Fordham wins series opener

SALISBURY, Maryland — An early 2-0 lead for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team was overtaken by a five run fifth inning from the Fordham Rams. The Hawks were unable to make a comeback, succumbing in their eighth straight game by a 7-2 final.

The Hawks fall to 1-8 on the season.

For the first four innings, everything was clicking. Starter Caleb Walston (Princess Anne, Maryland) was electric, allowing a walk in the second and a single in the third. Blake Coleman (Woodbridge, Virginia) and Brian Cordell (Pasadena, Maryland) delivered RBI singles in the second for the Hawks' 2-0 advantage.

The tide turned for Fordham in the fifth. Powered by four defensive errors and key stolen bases, the Rams surged ahead. Peppering in clutch singles the visitors built the lead up to 5-2.

Despite some fine pitching from Chris Sanders (Pocomoke City, Maryland) and Keith Carpenter (Walled Lake, Michigan), more baserunning success and Hawk errors added runs for Fordham in the seventh and ninth.

Maryland Eastern Shore also saw a top performance from Marcus Brown (Silver Spring, Maryland), who went 2-for-4 at the plate.

The two teams will meet for a doubleheader Saturday (March 2) at noon inside Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
