Strikeouts king as Hawks split with Lehigh, Monmouth

Four pitches reach career highs in punch outs

SALISBURY, Maryland — Four University of Maryland Eastern Shore pitchers either tied or earned a career high in strikeouts as the Hawks split on the Day 2 of the Aviary Invite Saturday (March 9). The Shore won the first game 5-1 over Lehigh but fell 3-0 in the second contest against Monmouth.

Dwayne Marshall (Piscataway, New Jersey) was the winning pitcher in the opener. Over six innings he surrendered one run and three hits and tied his career best with nine strikeouts. He last achieved that feat a couple weeks back against Eastern Kentucky. Chris Sanders (Pocomoke City, Maryland) registered his first college save with a nine up, nine down three inning effort with a career best four strikeouts.

In the nightcap, Marty Tolson, Jr. (Stafford, Virginia) took a hard luck loss with the Hawks' second one-run effort of the day. He fanned a career best eight Monmouth batters. Keith Carpenter (Walled Lake, Michigan) added three punch outs in his three innings of relief.

Carson Davis (Oakboro, North Carolina) got The Shore on the board first in the Lehigh game with a sacrifice fly. The home squad added the rest of their offense in the fifth inning, capped off with a two-run single by Marcus Brown (Silver Spring, Maryland).

Maryland Eastern Shore's record improves to 3-12 on the season. They will wrap up the Aviary Invite against Monmouth Sunday (March 10) at 3 p.m..
