SALISBURY, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team suffered a tough decision in the 2019 Aviary Invite finale. The Hawks were defeated by Hawks of a different nest as Monmouth earned an 11-3 win Sunday (March 10) at Perdue Stadium.
The home Hawks' record fell to 3-13 this season.
Despite the outcome the Hawks did receive a much needed boost from their offense. Led by three hit efforts from Avery Tunnell (Dover, Delaware) and D.J. Doherty (Harbeson, Delaware) the team registered a season high 13 safeties on the afternoon. Tyler Woodward (Gaithersburg, Maryland) went 2-for-4 in his first college start.
Monmouth matched The Shore in hits, but they were more successful in making them count. The visitors jumped out of the gate, scoring three times in the first inning. They would add a pair in the third and another in the fourth. A Michael Warley (Mechanicsville, Virginia) scored Matt Smith (Salisbury, Maryland) for the home sides' first run.
Two runs for Maryland Eastern Shore were sparked by Tunnell in the seventh. He smacked a double to score Woodward and came in to score himself on a wild pitch.
The Shore battles George Washington at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Arlington, Virginia. It will be the team's final non-conference tuneup before Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play.
