The Shore mercied by Eagles, 17-5

Hawks pitching struggles against Coppin hitters

HANOVER, Maryland — A bright start for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team quickly turned into a rough afternoon Saturday (March 16). For the second straight day, Coppin State completed a seven inning win over The Shore by a 17-5 final.

The Hawks cracked the scoreboard first in the third inning when Avery Tunnell (Dover, Delaware) scored on a wild pitch. Coppin would tie it in the bottom half, but Carson Davis (Oakboro, North Carolina) immediately responded with his first Division I homer in the fourth.

With a 2-1 advantage and Dwayne Marshall (Piscataway, New Jersey) on the hill, The Shore was in great position nearly the halfway mark. But in the fourth the Eagles surged ahead with seven runs off Marshall, and another nine runs in the fifth and sixth off relievers Keith Carpenter (Walled Lake, Michigan) and Miles LeVere (King George, Virginia).

Devynn Hancock (Salisbury, Maryland) supplied an RBI single in the fifth and Davis tripled home two runs in the seventh for a three RBI day.

Maryland Eastern Shore falls to 3-16 (0-2 MEAC) on the year. Sunday (March 17) at 1 p.m. is the Hawks' chance to salvage a game in this series.
