Baseball’s Spring Break spoiled by Wofford

Hawks blanked in opener; lose early lead in game two

SPARTANBURG, South Carolina — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team fell in two contests this week to Wofford College. The Terriers blanked the Hawks in game one, 9-0, on Tuesday (March 19) and came back to win game two Wednesday (March 20), 13-5.

Highlighting the week were the first two innings of the second game. D.J. Doherty (Harbeson, Delaware) delivered a two run single, and RBI's from Nick Roets (Charlotte, North Carolina) and Avery Tunnell (Dover, Delaware) gave The Shore a 4-2 lead.

But the Terriers continued to hammer away at Hawks starter Cameron Bratton (Cumberland, Maryland), regaining a 6-4 lead in the third. Tunnell clocked an RBI double in the fourth to pull within one, but The Shore could not get closer.

Wofford's pitching held Maryland Eastern Shore in check during the first game. Dillon Oxyer (Pasadena, Maryland) was the only Hawk to register a hit, going 2-for-3 at the dish.

On the mound, Johnny Franco (Hackettstown, New Jersey), Cory Poulsen (Bel Air, Maryland) and John Killmon (Bloxom, Virginia) delivered scoreless relief appearances. Franco appeared in both contests, giving up just one walk over 2 ⅓ innings.

The Shore's record drops to 3-19 on the season. MEAC play continues at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium this weekend versus Norfolk State.
