SALISBURY, Maryland — Peter Jamieson, Jr. (Carlton, Pennsylvania) delivered a walk-off single to help the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team achieve a split with Mount St. Mary's. The Hawks won the opener, 7-6, before losing the second game, 16-5.
A back-and-forth opener, both The Mount and The Shore battled their way to a 5-5 tie after four innings. Bryant Shives doubled in a run in the fifth to give the Mountaineers a 6-5 edge. In the bottom of the sixth, Tyler Woodward (Gaithersburg, Maryland) singled and Chris Allen (Suffolk, Virginia) was subbed in as a pinch runner. Brian Cordell (Pasadena, Maryland) smacked a triple to score Allen and tie the score.
In the seventh, Devynn Hancock (Salisbury, Maryland) reached via a single. After a sacrifice bunt and intentional walk, Jamieson walked up. His liner went over the head of The Mount's second baseman allowing Hancock to score.
Mount St. Mary's got revenge with a five run first to decisively take the second game. Marcus Brown (Silver Spring, Maryland) drove home two runs to cut into the lead, but the Mountaineers used a nine run sixth to erase any doubt. Aaron Murray, Jr. (Lanham, Maryland) and Joey Nicastro (New Market, Maryland) brought home runs in the seventh well after the outcome was decided.
On the mound, Johnny Franco (Hackettstown, New Jersey) went three scoreless frames and retired nine of 10 Mountaineers to earn his second win of the season. Chris Sanders (Pocomoke City, Maryland) and Derrick Rabb (Charlotte, North Carolina) gave up no earned runs in their relief outings.
The Hawks' record improves to 6-21 on the season. They remain home and welcome Route 13 rivals Delaware State for a three game series this weekend.
