BALTIMORE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team fell to the University of Maryland Baltimore County Retrievers in both games of their doubleheader on Thursday afternoon (March 28).
In game one, the Hawks fell 10-1. Their lone run came in the second inning as junior Allison Gingrich (Landisburg, PA) hit an RBI groundout to bring freshman Anissa Derifield (Woodbridge, VA) home to score.
Senior Breana Florez (Houston, TX), sophomore Stephanie Huff (Montoursville, PA) and freshman Jordan Kelly (Bridgeton, NJ) each got a hit in the first game. Other Hawks reaching base via walk in the contest were freshman Janiah Luciano (Teaneck, NJ) and seniors Daeshia Jones (Teaneck, NJ) and Heidi Smith (Odenton, MD).
In game two, Florez hit her first homerun in a Hawks uniform to score the first Eastern Shore run of the game in the second inning. Her big blast made the score 2-1.
With the Hawks traveling 5-1 in the fourth inning, their bats began to warm up to close the gap. Florez drew a walk and Kelly singled to start the inning. Two batters later, sophomore Nasya Goodman (Willingboro, NJ) singled to left center to score Florez. Luciano came up next and singled to bring Kelly across home plate. The score stood 5-3 after the inning ended.
UMBC would answer in the fifth with two runs and four runs in the sixth inning to finish the game with an 11-3 win.
Maryland Eastern Shore will be back in action this weekend (March 30-31) with a three game series at Norfolk State. The Spartans are currently tied for first place in the MEAC Northern Division.
