NORFOLK, Virginia — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team suffered two setbacks to Norfolk State Friday (April 12). The Spartans won in convincing fashion both times, with final scores of 20-4 and 24-5.
Bright spots for The Shore included Brian Cordell (Pasadena, Maryland), who earned two hits, two runs and two RBI's in the doubleheader. Towards the end of the first game he smacked his first collegiate home run - a solo shot to right. Cordell also tripled in the contest. Marcus Brown (Silver Spring, Maryland) went 2-for-2 at the dish in the opener with two RBI's.
The 44 runs scored by the Spartans are the most the Hawks have given up since March 22, 2011 against Campbell. That day, they also gave up 44, losing 25-13 in game one and 19-12 in game two. Norfolk State's last 20 run effort also came against The Shore back in 2016.
Maryland Eastern Shore drops to 9-29 (3-11 MEAC) on the season. The loss is further impacted by Delaware State's 10-0 win over Coppin State, increasing their lead over the Hawks for third place in the MEAC North.
Game three of the series is currently scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday (April 13).
