PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team fell to the UMBC Retrievers in both games of their doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon (April 16) at Hawk Field.
In game one, the Hawks (6-25) were unable to get a hit in a 13-0 defeat. The only Hawks to reach base in the game were freshman Anissa Derifield (Woodbridge, VA), who drew two walks, and senior Breana Florez (Houston, TX) drew a walk.
In game two, freshman Rachel Gingrich (Landisburg, PA) scored the Hawks first run of the day via error in the first inning to make the score 3-1. One inning later, Gingrich hit a single to the right center gap to score junior Kamryn Lanier (Chester, VA) to close the UMBC lead to 3-2.
With the Retrievers leading 4-2 in the fifth inning, senior Kiana Peterson (Willingboro, NJ) doubled to left center to score Gingrich to close the lead to one.
UMBC got one run in the seventh inning to take a 5-3 advantage to the bottom of the frame. Eastern Shore would mount a rally as they had the winning run up to bat two separate times, but they were unable to capitalize.
Maryland Eastern Shore will be back in action on Thursday (April 18) versus Saint Peter's in another doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
