Box Score DOVER, Delaware — In a contest riddled with errors and miscues, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team fell to the Delaware State hornets by a 15-5 final. For the Hawks, this is their eighth consecutive loss as they fall to 9-32 (3-13 MEAC) this season.
The game actually started out promising for the Hawks. Brian Cordell (Pasadena, Maryland) and Deyvnn Hancock (Salisbury, Maryland) scored after benefiting off three Hornet errors. With a 2-0 lead, The Shore hoped that Dwayne Marshall (Piscataway, New Jersey) could deliver a good start. But after several Hornet hits and a couple errors of their own, the Hawks found themselves down 5-2.
Marshall was swapped in the first inning for Caleb Walston (Princess Anne, Maryland). The Hornets continued their hitting barrage, scoring four in the second. Delaware State added runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth to invoke the slaughter rule.
An RBI single for D.J. Doherty (Harbeson, Delaware) in the fifth and a two run double for Dillon Oxyer (Pasadena, Maryland) in the sixth accounted for the Hawks' additional runs.
With the defeat, The Shore falls four games back of Delaware State for third place with eight games to play. Both teams continue the series with a doubleheader Friday (April 19) at 10 a.m. in Dover.
