DOVER, Delaware — Clutch hitting helped the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team snap its losing streak with a 12-8 win over Delaware State Friday (April 19). The Hawks surged ahead in game two but lost to the Hornets 11-5.
The Shore grabbed their first lead thanks to a five run sixth inning. Dillon Oxyer (Pasadena, Maryland) cleared the bases with a triple for a 6-4 advantage. After Delaware State rallied to tie, D.J. Doherty (Harbeson, Delaware) stepped up with the bases loaded and cleared them with a double.
Marcus Brown (Silver Spring, Maryland) led the Hawks with three hits, and Nick Roets (Charlotte, North Carolina) also contributed a multi-hit effort.
On the mound, Marty Tolson, Jr. (Stafford, Virginia) gave a solid performance with one earned run and four strikeouts over five frames. Chris Sanders (Pocomoke City, Maryland) went 2 â…“ and benefited from the late comeback to earn his third win.
In the second game, the Hawks got off to a 3-0 start with triples from Doherty and Peter Jamieson, Jr. (Carlton, Pennsylvania) and an RBI groundout from Roets. More RBI's from Oxyer and Doherty built the lead to 5-1.
But the Hornets responded with 10 unanswered. They rallied with four in the fourth to tie, and took the lead for good in the seventh.
The split improves the Hawks' record to 10-33 (4-14 MEAC).
Maryland Eastern Shore heads back to the First State Wednesday (April 24) for a 7 p.m. game with Delaware.
