Coppin State Rally Grounds the Hawks

Eastern Shore Mistakes Cost Them against the Eagles

BALTIMORE, Maryland The University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team held a 3-1 lead entering the bottom of the fifth inning against the Coppin State University Eagles on Sunday (April 7), but CSU would rally back and score eight unanswered runs to secure a 9-3 win.

The Hawks (5-22, 2-6 MEAC) committed four errors in the game. Two of them came in the fifth inning which helped Coppin State score seven runs in the frame.

Maryland Eastern Shore scored the first run of the game in the second inning. Junior Allison Gingrich (Landisburg, PA) hit an infield single and a throwing error from the Eagles on the play allowed senior Kiana Peterson (Willingboro, NJ) to come around to score from second base.

One inning later, senior Daeshia Jones (Teaneck, NJ) broke a 1-1 tie with one swing of the bat as she crushed a solo homerun over the left field fence. It was her first of the season and second of her Hawk career with both of her collegiate blasts coming at Coppin State.

The Shore extended their lead in the fifth inning as sophomore Stephanie Huff (Montoursville, PA) hit a sacrifice fly to left field that brought senior Breana Florez (Houston, TX) in to score. That would be their final run as Coppin State began their comeback in the bottom half of that inning.

Other Hawks to get a hit in the game were freshman Anissa Derifield (Woodbridge, VA) and sophomore Jordan Robinson (Gaithersburg, MD) as they both singled to right field.

Maryland Eastern Shore will now face fellow MEAC member North Carolina Central University on Wednesday (April 10) for a midweek doubleheader. NC Central swept the Hawks in three games back on March 15-16 in Cary, NC.
