SALISBURY, Maryland — Things started out well for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team against Norfolk State University on Saturday (May 4) morning, but rallies by the Spartans sunk the Hawks 3-2.
Shortstop
Dillon Oxyer (Pasadena, Maryland) started things off for the Shore in the third by driving in
Peter Jamieson (Cartlon, Pennsylvania) with a single.
Payton Hoskins (North East, Maryland) led off the fifth with a triple to left center and was immediately driven in on a sacrifice fly by
Brian Cordell (Pasadena, Maryland) to make it 2-0 in the Hawks favor.
Norfolk bats were mostly silent until the middle innings with starter
Marty Tolson Jr. (Stafford, Virginia) allowing just one runner on base until the fifth inning. A single error doomed the Shore in the sixth with two unearned runs crossing the plate to lock the game up at 2-2.
Despite the Hawks outhitting the Spartans 10-5 in the game, bats fell silent for the home squad and a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the ninth by Norfolk would turn into the winning run.
Hoskins led the Hawks (10-41) with three hits on the day.
Matt Smith (Salisbury, Maryland) added a pair of hits for the Shore. Tolson went 7 innings without giving up an earned run and fanned seven.
Incoming weather has moved the Shore's Senior Day and final home game from Sunday (May 5) to tonight (May 4) starting at 7 p.m.
