BALTIMORE, Maryland — After two sets the University of Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team had a 2-0 lead, but the Morgan State University Bears would rally and win the next three sets to win Friday evening (Sept. 27). The scores were 25-21, 25-15, 23-25, 21-25 and 10-15.
The Hawks (5-11, 0-1 MEAC) had a strangle hold on the match through two sets. Maryland Eastern Shore led throughout the first set and there were only two ties and one lead change in set number two.
The third set was the most highly contested set of the night. The Shore held a 21-19 lead in the set and was four points away from the sweep. Morgan State would respond by winning six of the next eight points to get their first set win of the matchup.
In the fourth set, the Bears got out to a 19-7 lead and held off a Hawks rally that brought Eastern Shore within three at 24-21 but Morgan State held on.
In the final frame, MSU held an 8-7 lead. A controversial out call went against the Hawks on the ensuing point and gave the Bears a 9-7 lead and they would close the match on a 7-3 run to finish their comeback.
Junior Tatjana Trifkovic (Belgrade, Serbia) had a double-double in the match with 13 kills and 10 digs. Classmate Haley Thomas (Waianae, Hawaii) led the squad with four aces and sophomore Stella Johnson (Newport News, Virginia) had 22 digs which was a game-high.
Maryland Eastern Shore will now face Coppin State on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 29) at 3 p.m. in their second conference match of the season.
