Shore edged in doubleheader at Mercer

Second and third game of series bring better results

MACON, GEORGIA – After a struggle in the first game of the season, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team responded with two tight games at Mercer University on Saturday (Feb. 15). Falling just 3-2 in the first game of the afternoon, the Hawks kept it close in the second game before a few late inning Bear runs to end it 5-1.

Center fielder Brian Cordell (Pasadena, Maryland) picked up where he left off on Friday night with his second homer of the season in the first inning, giving the Shore its first lead of the season. Cordell would also walk twice in the game.

Senior Marty Tolson, Jr. (Stafford, Virginia) drew the start for the Hawks and held steady into the fifth, giving up two runs over 4.2 innings of work.

Down a run in the seventh, left fielder Blake Coleman (Woodbridge, Virginia) evened up the contest with a solo shot to left.

Chris Sanders (Pocomoke City, Maryland) threw 1.2 innings in relief, striking out two before giving way to Cameron Bratton (Cumberland, Maryland) in the seventh.

A throwing error and timely hitting in the eighth would end up grounding the Hawks in the first game as Mercer's leadoff batter was able to make it 3-2.

The Shore put men on in the top of the ninth for one last offensive push to no avail as the Mercer pitching staff was able to put out the fire.

With game one in the books, senior Caleb Walston (Princess Anne, Maryland) started the second game of the afternoon for the Hawks.

Falling behind 3-0 in the first the offense looked to find rhythm but was only able to plate one run all game when shortstop Dylan Oxyer (Pasadena, Maryland) singled in the fourth and stole second base. A single straight up the middle by Cordell put the Hawks on the board and gave Cordell his third RBI of the weekend.

Mercer tacked on two security runs in the sixth and seventh innings without the Shore threatening again.

The final game of the series, originally scheduled for noon on Sunday (Feb. 17) was canceled due to inclement weather and will not be made up. The Hawks will return home for a four-game series against University of Albany beginning Friday Feb. 21.
