Eastern Shore Tops Buffalo for Win Number One

Hawks Conclude Spartan Classic Tomorrow

SPARTANBURG, South Carolina — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team grabbed their first win of the season on Saturday (Feb. 15) against the University of Buffalo Bulls in day two of the Spartan Classic Tournament. The Hawks won the game 5-4.

"This was the game that we finally put everything together as we had timely hits and Nasya pitched an amazing game," Hawks coach Karla Powell said. "These ladies are really buying in to what coach (Bradley) Ross and I preach every day at practice."

Junior Nasya Goodman (Willingboro, New Jersey) tossed a complete game for Maryland Eastern Shore inside the circle. She struck out seven batters with just four walks.

Eastern Shore entered the bottom of the fourth inning down 2-0. They would respond by scoring five runs in the bottom of the frame.

Following a single from junior Jordan Robinson (Gaithersburg, Maryland), sophomore Alona Robillard (Lake Wales, Florida) homered to tie the game at two. Two batters later, junior Zoe Jackson (Newark, Maryland) reached on an error and senior Allison Gingrich (Landisburg, Pennsylvania) scored on the play to give the team a 3-2 lead.

Senior LeAnn Gingrich (Landisburg, Pennsylvania) drew a walk to put runners on first and second following the error. After that, sophomore Kaylyn Sterling (Half Moon Bay, California) shot a double down the right field line to score both Jackson and LeAnn Gingrich to put the squad up 5-2.

The Bulls rallied late to score in the sixth and seventh innings. They would load the bases with two outs in the final inning, but Goodman forced a pop out to end the game.

With one win under their belt, the Hawks look to build off their success as they complete their play in the Spartan Classic tomorrow at 11 a.m. when they face Oakland University.

"If we are selfless at the plate and execute in the field, we will continue to win games like we did today," Powell said.
