CONWAY, South Carolina — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team fell in both of their games on Friday (Feb. 28) in day one of the Coastal Carolina Tournament. They dropped their contest with Monmouth 9-1 and fell in their second game of the day 10-1 to Ohio University.
In game one against Monmouth, the Hawks (1-10) struck first. Sophomore Kaylyn Sterling (Half Moon Bay, California) hit a leadoff single to begin the game. After a single from junior Jordan Robinson (Gaithersburg, Maryland), freshman Tyanna Roberts (Woodbridge, Virginia) hit a RBI single to score Sterling and give the team a 1-0 lead.
Monmouth answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 2-1 lead. They would break the game open in the second inning with a grand slam to take a 6-1 advantage and win the game in five innings.
Eastern Shore found themselves in a 5-0 hole after two innings against Ohio in game two. They would get their lone run in the third inning after sophomore Alona Robillard (Lake Wales, Florida) scored via a wild pitch. OU answered with one run in the bottom of the third and scored four runs in the fifth inning to end the game.
The Hawks will be back in action tomorrow (Feb. 29) against Coastal Carolina at 2 p.m. and versus USC-Upstate at 6:30 p.m.
"Our biggest thing is that we have to continue to attack after we see some early success," Hawks coach Karla Powell said. "We are seeing two good opponents tomorrow so it gives us a chance to get back on the field and continue to build on what we can do."
