CONWAY, South Carolina — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team fell to Monmouth University 20-3 on the final day of the Coastal Carolina University Tournament on Sunday (March 1).
Maryland Eastern Shore (1-13) fell behind early. They were down 13-0 after two innings of play. The Hawks would score all three of their runs in the third inning after falling behind.
Eastern Shore loaded the bases with one out in the top of the third. Junior Jordan Robinson (Gaithersburg, Maryland) grounded into a fielder's choice that allowed sophomore Jayla Pinkney (Severn, Maryland) to score and give the team their first run.
Freshman Tyanna Roberts (Woodbridge, Virginia) came up next and reached on an error. Monmouth would commit a second error on the play that brought sophomore Kaylyn Sterling (Half Moon Bay, California) and Robinson in to score. The Shore trailed 13-3 headed into the bottom of the frame.
MU responded by scoring three runs in the third. They would add four more in the fourth inning and that led to the game ending after five innings were played.
Senior Allison Gingrich (Landisburg, Pennsylvania), junior Nasya Goodman (Willingboro, New Jersey) and Roberts accounted for the squad's three hits in the contest.
Maryland Eastern Shore will play their home openers this Wednesday (March 4) as they welcome Saint Peter's for a midweek doubleheader.
