BALTIMORE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team fell in both of their games on Saturday (March 7) in the first day of the Morgan State University Tournament. They fell to the Manhattan College Jaspers 9-0 and 6-1 to the Morgan State University Bears.
"We had mistakes that made it tough on us today," Hawks coach Karla Powell said. "The good thing about this tournament is we get a chance to see both of these teams again tomorrow."
In game one, the Jaspers scored four runs in the first inning and five runs in the second. They scored each of their runs with two outs.
The Hawks got three hits in the contest. They came off singles from Kaylyn Sterling (Half Moon Bay, California) and Jayla Pinkney (Severn, Maryland) and a double from Tyanna Roberts (Woodbridge, Virginia).
Morgan State got out to a 6-0 lead after three innings in game two. The Shore scored their lone run in the fourth.
After Alona Robillard (Lake Wales, Florida) and Roberts drew walks, Nasya Goodman (Willingboro, New Jersey) singled to load the bases. Pinkney came up after that and hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to bring Robillard in to score.
Neither team scored after that. Jordan Robinson (Gaithersburg, Maryland) also had a hit against the Bears in game two. Goodman would toss a complete game inside the circle giving up just one earned run and striking four batters out.
Maryland Eastern Shore will play the same two teams tomorrow (March 8) beginning with a game with Manhattan at 10 a.m. and closing the weekend with a game with the Bears at 2 p.m.
