PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore got some much needed minutes for the reserves on Sunday against visiting Millersville University and picked up a victory in the process.
The Hawks (3-3) played all 13 active members of the roster 10 minutes or more and everyone scored.
It was a huge day for the bench in fact as they outscored the Division II Marauders (1-4) reserves 48-15.
"I thought Ariana Seawell (Bronx, New York) was impressive in back-to-back games off the bench," Hawks coach Fred Batchelor said. "It's going to be interesting moving forward. I think Taylor Clayborne (Upper Marlboro, Maryland) has been consistently playing well for us. Angelique Taylor (Wachapreague, Virginia) as well off the bench and Cache' Wilson (Baltimore, Maryland) for the most part doing her job."
Seawell finished with nine points and three rebounds in just 14 minutes. Clayborne chipped in eight points and three boards and Taylor added eight points and two rebounds.
Point guard Mya Thomas (Chesapeake, Virginia) led the Hawks with 10 points and was 2-for-2 from behind the arc in 20 minutes.
The Eastern Shore starters played a total of just 78 of 200 minutes in the contest.
The Shore forced 28 Millersville turnovers and scored 32 points off those, while turning it over 16 times and giving up 16 points. Eastern Shore won the rebounding battle 34-32, but the Marauders actually held a 12-11 advantage on the offensive glass.
"I thought their bigs were athletic and they were aggressive," Batchelor said. "They were as good as any team we have played at going to the glass. They had 12 offensive rebounds and I think that is one of the things they are strong with."
The Hawks have struggled from the line all season, but finished the game 21-of-26 from the line.
"In the first half we were 7-for-8," Batchelor said. "But for us to shoot 80% on 26 free throws during the game is pretty good. We made almost twice as many as they attempted and that is always good. Hopefully we can keep improving."
Next up for Maryland Eastern Shore is a Wednesday (Nov. Dec. 1) contest at Richmond (3-3). Tipoff for that one will be at 6 p.m. and the game will be available on ESPN+.
