NEWARK, Delaware — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore won their second match of the season on Saturday (September 4) after sweeping the NJIT Highlanders. They fell to the University of Delaware Blue Hens later on in the day. Both matches were a part of the University of Delaware Invitational.
In the match versus NJIT, the Hawks took set one 25-19. The highlight of the frame was the team's 6-0 run with sophomore Portia Strasburg on the service line after the score was tied at 11. The second set was a tighter affair as Eastern Shore was able to outlast the Highlanders for a 26-24 victory.
In the third set, NJIT jumped out to an early 6-3 lead. The Hawks countered with a 5-0 run with junior Sophia Chacon on the service line. The Shore would never trail again as they cruised to a 25-17 win in the frame to finish the sweep of the Highlanders.
Sophomore Maya Hendricks and graduate student Marina Cruz headlined the team's balanced attack as they tied for the game high in kills with nine apiece. The Hawks had strong defensive effort at the net as well as they finished with 10.5 blocks.
In the second match of the day against Delaware, the Blue Hens jumped out on the Hawks early in every set. They were able to sweep the Hawks and had their lead build up to as many as 16 in the second set. Hendricks led the Hawks in kills with six. Sophomore Jalynn Robinson was named to the All-Tournament team as she had a total 49 assists and 22 digs over the course of three matches.
Eastern Shore will travel to Washington, D.C. next weekend (September 10-11) to compete in another tournament hosted by George Washington University.
