WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team was unable to grab a late season out of conference win on Tuesday (October 4) against American University, falling to the Eagles 0-3 in Washington DC at Bender Arena.

The Hawks (2-12, 0-3 MEAC) hitting was not up to the usual standard, finishing at just .056 against the Eagles and struggling to find the floor, falling 15-25, 22-25 and 16-25.

In the first set the Hawks were able to jump out to an early 3-0 lead but Eagle scoring runs started to put Maryland Eastern Shore away before they could recuperate. Back-to-back four-point stints by the Eagles would be the difference.

Heading into the second set the Hawks were able to build some pressure, playing the Eagles within three points and fighting until the last possible point. Again, it was the early series that separated the squads, with the Eagles gaining a point up every time the Hawks seemed to be gaining the advantage.

By the third set the Hawks began to have issues across the board, with problems at the service line, the net and on the attack. There was a short three-point run by Maryland Eastern Shore but American responded with a nine-point spree that made taking the match unattainable.

This weekend the Hawks will look to get back into fighting shape, taking on South Carolina State University and North Carolina Central University in MEAC play.
