UMES can’t find execution in loss at Fairleigh Dickinson

Hawks return home Tuesday

TEANECK, New Jersey — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore couldn't find many positives to focus on Sunday (Nov. 27) following a loss at Fairleigh Dickinson.

The Hawks shot just 25% (17-of-66) from the field and 14% (2-of-14) from behind the arc and 50% (5-of-10) from the free throw line in an 82-41 loss.

"They really just outplayed us," Hawks coach Fred Batchelor said. "I thought they were much better coached. And they knew exactly what they wanted to do and they beat us to every spot. They were a very good team tonight and we were not."

UMES turned the ball over 18 times and had just five assists as a team. The squad was outrebounded 44-39. The Knights used several runs throughout the game to push out to the huge advantage including a 22-5 run to head to halftime. The Hawks also had an eight minute scoring drought during that quarter.

"This comes down to getting your team ready to play and obviously I didn't do a good job of getting them ready to play because we were not ready from the jump," Batchelor said. "Their second team would have beat us by 20 tonight. We just were not ready to play and I have to do a better job of getting them more prepared and more ready."

Freshman Jála Bannerman (Baltimore, Maryland) led UMES with 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting and added two rebounds and a steal. Zamara Haynes (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) led the team with eight rebounds, while also chipping in eight points, a pair of assists and a steal.

The Hawks (1-6) will return home for a 6 p.m. home contest on Tuesday (Nov. 29) against Virginia Union. They will then travel to Navy on Dec. 1 and James Madison on Dec. 4.

"We have to learn quick. We have to learn from the experience," Batchelor said. "Somebody has to teach them how to get there. This is a tough patch. We don't have a whole lot of time to figure it out. We have to work through it and that is the one thing I know we will do."
