SALISBURY, Maryland – It wasn't the ending the Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team wanted for the opening weekend at Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, as the Hawks dropped game four to Albany 13-0 on Sunday (February 27).
"We got down early, didn't hit the ball," head coach
Brian Hollamon said. "We needed to be better in all aspects of the game."
The Hawks fell behind 3-0 early in the first following the Great Dane's (4-3) Brandon Malm's home run, followed by a manufactured run off of a sacrifice fly to left field.
Albany didn't hold off on the offense, continuing to sprinkle in runs in the second, third and fourth innings.
"We couldn't recover," Holloman said, "They chipped away in between the (big innings)."
The Danes laid it on in the sixth, putting down four more runs, which had Hollamon make some changes in the field to check out some of the younger Hawks.
Following many of the regular starters were
Anders Brown to center, Eric Hampton to third,
Ryan Davis seeing time at third and short,
Joe Wright Jr. to the outfield,
Luke Myers to second,
Carter Rieben to the outfield and
Gabe Williams coming in as a late replacement at catcher.
"We threw some young kids out there, they did a good job out there as well," Hollamon said.
Next up for the Shore is welcoming Georgetown to Perdue Stadium on Wednesday (March 2) for a single game matinee, starting at 2pm. The Hoyas currently sit at 3-3, most recently taking two of three against MEAC rival Norfolk State over the weekend.
