PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland – Seeking their first win of the season, the Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team welcomes Georgetown University to Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Wednesday (March 2).
First pitch is slated for 2 p.m., with freshman
Caden Parker making his first career start for the Hawks (0-7) going up against righty Carter Bosch for the Hoyas (3-3).
Hawks Seeking Balance
It's been a rough start for the Shore, getting swept in both weekend series early in the season as the team has struggled to stay consistent in all three phases of the game.
With Parker getting his first start ever, the Hawks look to back up the true freshman in the field and in the box. The Delmar, Delaware native has made two appearances so far for The Shore, holding a 10.38 ERA over 4.1 innings pitched, tied with
Blake Rebstock for pitchers who have not made a start in 2022.
For position players, catcher
Ryan Howe has been a staple in the lineup for the Hawks since game two of the season, splitting time behind the dish and at the designated hitter spot. The junior has six hits with a walk over six games, including a home run against Longwood University – good for a .588 SLG%.
Freshman
Kyle Cincinnati also had a solid weekend during his two starts and pinch-hitting spots, working to a .400 average and .625 on-base. Howe and Cincinnati held down the field general spot as
Tyler Woodward works his way back after taking the weekend off for rest.
Ironman
Dillon Oxyer missed his start at shortstop for the first time since stepping on campus, but still leads the team with seven hits in six games. Oxyer still made an appearance for the Hawks in that game he missed though, giving the Shore two innings against Albany and allowing just three hits in the appearance.
Oxyer hasn't been the only two-way player for the Shore, as sophomore
Carter Rieben holds a 3.86 ERA over 2.1 IP and logged his first at bat against Albany on Sunday.
Scouting the Hoyas
The matchup against Georgetown starter Carter Bosch will be tough for the Hawks, the righty was the best pitcher for the Hoyas in 2021 over nine games pitched with six starts with a 3.45 ERA over 31.1 IP. Standing at 6'2", the wiry senior held batters to a .152 AVG in his junior year and a .235 AVG as a sophomore before the season was shut down. He most recently pitched against Norfolk State, going 1.2 IP and allowed one run.
Much like the Hawks, Georgetown is led by their starting shortstop, Andrew Ciufo, who has started all six contests for the Hoyas for a slashline of .391/.481/.739. The junior has hit two home runs and two doubles, while driving in nine runs and going 3/3 in his stolen base attempts.
Again, much like the Hawks, a pair of catchers in Matt Stone and Adam Dapkewicz have been solid for the visitors. Stone holds a 1.136 OPS in his appearances at the plate and Dapkewicz is third on the team with four RBIs.
Hawks and Hoyas History
Currently the Hawks are on a six-game skid against the Hoyas, with the only win in 2016 in the second game of a doubleheader at Georgetown.
This will be the first game between the two squads, having a home-and-home in 2022, much like was scheduled in 2020 until the season was cut short. In 2020 the Hoyas took the game 7-4 with the Hawks driving in three of the runs late in the eighth inning.
