BALTIMORE, Maryland — In their final road game of the regular season, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team endured one of their roughest shooting nights of the season as they fell to the Morgan State University Bears 82-48 on Monday night (February 28).
The Hawks (10-14, 5-8 MEAC) came into the game versus Morgan State having won their last two games. The catalyst for them winning those contests was their outside shooting as they made a combined 24 3-pointers on 48.9%, but Monday they were 18.2% behind the line and made just four.
"Whatever the 'IT' factor is that we've shown on many occasions was not there tonight," head coach Jason Crafton said. "Credit Morgan for jumping on us early. We never responded and that is disappointing because we've shown the ability to do so in the past."
Junior Da'Shawn Phillip got a dunk at the 18:53 mark of the first half to score the first points of the game for the Hawks. His classmate Kevon Voyles got a layup a minute and a half later to make the score 10-4. The Bears would then score 11 straight points to lead 21-4 at the under 12:00 media timeout.
After the break, junior Dom London hit a 3-pointer to end the scoring drought. The team would get the deficit down to 13 on four different occasions with the final time happening at the 6:46 mark via a jumper by freshman Chace Davis that made the score 31-18. Unfortunately, that was the closest the squad would get for the rest of the game as the Bears took a 46-24 lead into the locker room.
The second half was much of the same as Eastern Shore would see their deficit grow to 30 points after five minutes had been played. The only time the lead would get back under 30 was after senior Mayowa Akinsanya finished a pass from London with a layup to make the score 69-40 with 10:10 remaining.
Phillip was the only player to get into double figures on Monday night as he had 10 points. Pollard, Jr. finished tied for the game high in rebounds with seven. MSU had 10 players score led by Lagio Grantsaan's 19 points.
The Shore will now conclude their regular season with a Thursday night game with Delaware State. The will begin at approximately 7:30 p.m. and will serve as senior day for the Hawks.
"Film sessions and intense practices will be needed to clean up tonight's poor effort and overall execution," Crafton said. "I expect us to be ready to go against a scrappy Delaware State team and play to our standard as we honor our seniors."
