SALISBURY, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team scored first in their game Tuesday morning (March 15) with the Syracuse Orange, but could not hold off their ACC opponent as the Hawks fell 5-1.
The Hawks lone run came in the second inning. Freshman Rebecca Miller tripled to right center field to begin the bottom half of the inning. Her classmate Kylee Lehman came up after that and singled up the middle to bring Miller in to score and give Eastern Shore a 1-0 advantage.
Maryland Eastern Shore held the lead until the top of the fourth inning. The Orange capitalized on an error by the Hawks to score two runs in the inning and go up 2-1.
Syracuse would add another run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to make the score 5-1. The Shore did not get a runner into scoring position in the final three innings as Summer Clark came in for SU and tossed those frames and struck out six batters.
Lehman went 2-3 in the game to go along with her RBI. Freshman McKenzie Abiley went 1-3 in the game as each of the team's four hits in the game came from first-year players.
The Hawks will now travel north to face Rutgers for a pair of games on Thursday (March 17) beginning at noon.
